Spain has a long history dating back to the time of the Romans when Iberia was a major supplier for Rome itself. In the last 30 years, modernisation has come in a rush and this has happened not just in the vineyards and in the wineries but also in legislation. Today Spain is the third largest producer of wines in the world and the largest grower of vines by area. It is also the country using the largest number of native varieties, said to be over 400, the flagships being Tempranillo, Grenache for the red wines, Verdejo, Albarino and Macabeo for the white.
