Macabeu is most probably from Spanish/Catalonia origin, where it is called Maccabeo or Viura. In France, it is grown in the appellations Côtes du Roussillon, Banyuls, Maury and Rivesaltes. It gives a fine, fruity, straw-yellow color wine, with high alcohol and sometimes lacking in acidity. It is also used for the production of sparkling wines. Aromas of fresh pineapple, anise, honey, coconut, hints of fennel and gingerbread.
