Most likely from Bordeaux origins, it comes from a cross between Magdeleine Noire des Charentes (so Merlot is half-brother of Malbec) and Cabernet Franc. It is the king grape of Bordeaux right bank (Pomerol, Saint-Emilion appellations) and is also planted in Cahors area and in a lot of IGP all over France. Its typical aromas are the ones of cherry, wild blackberry and strawberry.
